Tennis: the Gentleman’s Game
For those watching the men’s Wimbledon final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, it was a treat to the eyes.
The best players in the world going head-to-head all the way until the bitter end was incredible, but the sportsmanship after the game was even better.
Nadal, the 22-year-old Spaniard defeated former No. 1 player Federer in five sets, going down to the wire.
After the game, both players went up and hugged and shook hands at the net graciously. It had to be hard for Federer, who had won the previous five Wimbledon titles, to be defeated, but he handled with class despite the tear in his eye as he complimented his opponent’s play.
When you think about it, tennis truly is a gentleman’s game. It’s very similar to golf in the way that the players have respect for themselves as well as others.
While the other sports may have more excitement, there is a also a lack of manners and the way players carry themselves.
How many times have you seen a batter and pitcher collide in a fury of fists over a pitch? How many yellow flags have you seen thrown for a late hit or unsportsmanlike conduct? Sure, these things may make the game a little more interesting, but there are plenty of people who can watch golf and tennis and enjoy them without all the outside drama.
As a person or an athlete, things can be learned from these guys. Take notes.
